During the Twenty Twenty final Srisanth grabbed the catch of Misbal Ul-Haq of the final ball. While people where wondering how its an unorthodox fielding position and how he grabbed the catch out of nowhere the oft repeated saying was said again “You can find a Mallu anywhere in the world”. This seems to hold good for the Mallu heroines who have invaded most of the regions.
The most famous of the heroines from Kerala have been the Travancore sisters Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini. Their niece Shobana also became a renowed actress in all the south Indian languages and is also a National award winner. Sri Vidya was another famous heroine who is well known in other languages. Like this there have been on and off influx of Mallu heroines but never was the success of them as huge as it there at present.
Now if you consider both Tamil and Telugu industries there are heroines like Asin, Nayanatara, Meera Jasmine, Bhavana, Sandhya, Priyamani, Mamata Mohandas, Renuka Menon, Gopika who have made their mark. Asin and Nayanatara are infact fighting for the number one spot in Tamil and they are also top stars in telugu industry. Both had good launch with ‘Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammai’ and ‘Chandramukhi’ respectively. Asin established herself as a intelligent actress who can carry of any role with ease, whereas Nayanatara has the youth going gaga over her with her Oomph factor. Though the careers of both Meera Jasmine and Gopika were affected because of their impending marriage rumours they still have got the due recognition. Bhavana who has done Ontari and Sandhya who was seen in Annavaram have a bright future ahead. The career graph of both the Yama Gola girls Priyamani and Mamta Mohandas is steeply rising.
If you feel that it is only Telugu and Tamil industries where there is an influx of mallu heroines then you are wrong because even Bollywood is not spared. Vidya Balan who is the current flavour of bollywood is a Malayali. She had infact tried her hand in Malayalam movies but failed to make a mark. But in Bollywood she made a huge impact. After the super success of Parineeta and Lage Raho Munnabhai she delivered two more hits last year with Heyy Baby and Bhool Bhulaya. Infact Bhool Bhulaya is adopted version of Shobhana’s Malayalam movie ‘Manichitra’ which was made as ‘Chandramukhi’ in Telugu and Tamil. Vidya has lot of good projects lined up as well. Antara Mali who had a brief run is also from Kerala. Even Mallika Arora and Amrita Arora who have sizzled bollywood with their great bodies are also half malayali. And to give them company in bollywood there is Asin. She is making her debut opposite none other than Aamir Khan in the remake version of the blockbuster ‘Ghazini’. She is already famous with the Hindi audience with ads like Fairever, Mirinda, Colgate, Parachute oil and Spinz talc etc.
Gone where the days when Shakeela was the most recognized name among the heroines there. Infact when Parvathi Omanakuttam won the Miss India 2008 title it was hardly a surprise because Kerala has now become the glamour capital of the country. And just a question for ourselves “Name a present telugu heroine who is from Andhra?”
