Super Telugu’s take on which players the franchises should go all out for during the IPL auction. Some are well known, some are unsung. The bidding is scheduled to take place on February 20th at Bangalore.
BEN STOKES (ENGLAND) : Allrounders have always been the most wanted species in limited overs cricket. With the 4 overseas player rule, this is even more evident in IPL auctions. Stokes played a couple of good innings in the last tour to India, but people remember him the most for 6,6,6,6 by Carlos Braithwaite in World T20 finals. Though his stats aren’t as good as a Jacques Kallis or a Shane Watson, he does have Match winner credentials. KKR could do well by going all out for him to compensate for the absence of Andre Russell. Stokes has a base price of INR 2 crore.
Positives : Can complete his 4 over quota, aggressive bat. Good death bowler despite the Braithwaite onslaught.
Negatives : English players never rocked the IPL because pitches might not suit their style of play.
PAT CUMMINS (AUSTRALIA) : Fast bowler Pat Cummins has always done well whenever he was picked for Australia. He is a genuine wicket taker and can generate lively pace in the Powerplay which could be a threat to local sloggers. With both Kolkata and Dharmasala pitches currently turning bowler friendly he can be quite a handful. For people who followed Big Bash league closely, there is a new element to his game. The tear away fast bowler has improved his batting by leaps and bounds. For a team like Rising Pune Giants which doesn’t have a single oversees seamer he would be an automatic pick.
Positives : Wicket taking ability, Sheer pace and lower order stability
Negatives : Very very injury prone. To put things into perspective, after playing his only test match for Australia in 2011, he has played just 8 first class matches.
JOHNNY BAIRSTOW (ENGLAND) :
Couple of years back Johnny Bairstow was in doldrums, having lost his place to Jos Buttler and dropping down the hierarchy of English Wicket keeper Batsmen. But this year he made a great comeback averaging 58 in tests with good strike rate and is named in the ICC Team of the year. He is good in chases when his team is batting last. That composure might serve him well here.
Positives : Couple of teams are struggling with Wicket Keepers. Again to put things in perspective – My favourite Robin Uthappa of KKR was actually dropped from his state team Karnataka squad itself. Bairstow can serve as backup.
Negatives: Inconsistent in Limited over games.
IMRAN TAHIR (SOUTH AFRICA) :
Was part of Delhi Daredevils – he should not have been released in the first place. But Rahul Dravid must have thought that since Amit Mishra is already part of the squad, they cant afford to play both of them. Imran Tahir had always been a poor Test bowler and brilliant Limited over bowler. In terms of ability to pick up crucial wickets in middle overs he is second to none. Sunrisers doesn’t have a spinner and he could fit right in.
Positives : Wicket taking ability, motivational team player.
Negatives : One dimensional, tough to keep his place because of the 4 overseas player rule
SEKKUGE PRASANNA (SRI LANKA) : We had to put in a dark horse. Sekkuge Prasanna had played some good innings in Bangladesh Premier League. He also won Sri Lanka the crucial third T20 against South Africa to clinch the series. For teams who got tired of picking Thisara Perara they can try him. (Ey raayi aithe emi pallu raalukottukotaaniki.) His devil may care batting attitude might suit Indian pitches and he can chip in with a couple of overs as well. Can be a good backup player for strong teams.
Positives : Lusty lower order hitting
Negatives : Could be flash in pan. Was never able to get a fixed berth in his national team.
We are sticking to 5 players. Other overseas players who might get good attention during IPL auction include Jason Roy, Colin Munro, Kyle Abbott, David Weise, Corey Anderson, Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan, Mitchell Johnson, Kyle Abbott, Ben Dunk, Tymal Mills.
