Vanisri was born as Ratna Kumari in 1948 at Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Originally sent to Madras for education at Andhra Mahila Sabha, she was spotted by a veteran Kannada director and made her debut there. Perceived initially as a lookalike to Mahanati Savithri gaaru, she slowly went about making a mark in Telugu industry.
Her Telugu debut was ‘Bheeshma'(1962). It was the Late S.V.Ranga Rao gaaru who coined her name by smartly reversing his Film Production Company’s name (Sri Vani Films). Marapurani Katha(1967) was her first film as heroine. For the ANR film Aatmiyulu(1969), she rejected the role of sister character and insisted on heroines role till the producers relented. After being amongst the top heroines throughout the 70’s she married her family doctor and left the scene. Later in late 80’s she made a comeback in older character roles with ‘Atha ki Yamudu, Ammayiki Mogudu’.
